Many times when conflict arises between individuals a few key elements are forgotten.
1. You are on the same team.
Conflict occurs mainly between individuals in a “relationship”, whether this is marital, friendship, or in the workplace. This fact is quickly forgotten as issues arise because, many times, issues put individuals as odds.
While a situation or idea may be in contrast in a given moment, it is crucial to remember that you are both overall seeking to attain a similar end goal; whether it is a successful marriage, beneficial friendship, or profitable business.
During moments of conflict it is important to reference this fact so you can come to an end result that increases the success of your mutual goal.
2. You value each other.
This factor is more relevant in a marriage or in friendship when you care deeply for the person you are in conflict with. However, it is applicable in a business relationship as well.
Whether or not you “value” the individual you are working with, the company you work for sees significance in their contributions and position. It is therefore necessary for you to respect the relevance of the individual.
Throughout conflicting situations reinforce your belief that the individual is significant and esteemed by you or by the organization, and that their involvement in resolving the conflict is a necessity.
Focusing on these two elements during moments of disagreement enables individuals who are in opposition to partner with each other through mutual end goals and respect.
